Physical Education

We are aspiring athletes!

At Southville Primary School, we aspire to be athletes. Our PE curriculum will encourage our children to understand the importance of lead healthy and active lives. We will inspire a life-long passion for sports and physical fitness in our children. The curriculum will promote personal confidence, respect, fair play and teamwork through competitive and non-competitive sporting activities that are accessible to all. We will give the children access to a broad scope of cross-curricular opportunities, including games and activities, which will give them the opportunity to expand their physical and emotional well-being through engagement in daily physical activity. Children will be supported to develop their resilience and emotional intelligence through experiencing healthy outdoor learning, such as Forest School. We will encourage and support the children on their journey to becoming enthusiastic and role models for sports and sportsmanship.

We will do this by:

  • Having fun
  • Providing varied opportunities for, and encouraging all children to work and play with others in a range of sporting activities
  •  Enabling all children to develop and explore physical skills with increasing control and coordination
  • Developing the children’s enjoyment of physical activity through engaging, creating and active activities
  • Developing children’s confidence to excel in a broad range of physical activities whilst recognising the importance of positive competition
  • Modelling how to improve the quality and control of their performance
  • Developing an understanding of personal performance and team work, supporting the children to understand the best ways to develop and influence yourself and those around you
  • Supporting the children to experience success in sport
  • Teaching children to recognise and describe how their bodies change and feel during exercise
  • Encouraging the children to recognise the physical and mental benefits associated with leading a healthy lifestyle

Implementation

All classes have two timetabled PE slots per week, one of which is for indoor PE and the other for outdoor PE. The long-term plan ensures a balance of team games, gymnastics, dance and athletics across each year group. We teach children about the importance of being physically active and the right to be healthy, making links with the PSHE and science curriculum.

Forever Sport

We work with Bristol Sports Foundation using their Forever Sport programme to deliver high quality, engaging Physical Education (PE) lessons and sports coaching. We use Forever Sport lesson plans for outdoor PE which are age-appropriate, challenging and fully meet the requirements of the National Curriculum. Lessons are carefully sequenced to ensure learning and knowledge is built up over time. Click here to see an example six week overview and a medium term plan

We work together with our head coach to pinpoint specific areas of the curriculum teachers need more support with; these units are delivered by Bristol Sport specialist coaches alongside the teacher. The mentoring programme aims to upskill, motivate, and build teacher confidence. Additionally, we also have a PE specialist teacher who takes a number of outdoor PE sessions across the school, delivers after-school clubs and leads school teams in tournaments and competitions.

Real PE

We use Real PE to support our teaching and learning of indoor PE. The aim of the sessions is to help support every child to develop the physical literacy, emotional and thinking skills to achieve in PE, Sport and life. The child centred approach includes challenge and support for every child. It is fully aligned to the National Curriculum and focuses on the development of agility, balance and coordination, healthy competition and cooperative learning through a unique approach to teaching and learning in PE. In Real PE lessons the children have a clear learning journey which is shared. In each unit the children focus on two physical skills and one other skill e.g. social skills. Children assess themselves against these skills thus enabling them to become assessment capable learners.

Swimming

The school provides swimming lessons for children in years 4, 5 and 6 with catch-up work in year 6 for those children who have not achieved the minimum expected standard in swimming from the National Curriculum. In a term where swimming takes place for a particular class, this replaces one of the other PE units for that term.

Extra Curricular Opportunities

We provide all children with the opportunities to take part in competitions and festivals with other schools, supporting them to be active, resilient and play fairly in new environments. The school take part in a wide range of activities, including tag rugby, football, basketball and athletics. They are taught how to win and lose with grace and how to treat others with respect.
