At Southville Primary, we believe that every child is a unique individual with their own distinct strengths, passions, and superpowers. Our primary focus is getting to know the whole child and truly understanding what makes your child tick. We prioritise building deep, positive relationships, where our caring adults champion high-quality interactions—following your child’s lead, sharing genuine interest, and taking turns in play. Rather than directing the learning, our practitioners use purposeful language modelling, open-ended questioning, and collaborative thinking to build on children's natural ideas and deepen conversations. We deliberately connect prior learning and real-life experiences to nurture the Characteristics of Effective Learning, empowering our youngest pupils to explore confidently, think critically, and solve problems independently.
Our approach to behaviour is rooted in being trauma-informed. We recognise that children thrive when they feel safe, secure, and connected. Rather than simply responding to behaviour, we seek to understand it, helping children develop the skills to regulate their emotions, make positive choices, and build healthy relationships. Through consistent routines, nurturing relationships, and calm, supportive guidance, we create an environment where every child feels valued, emotionally secure, and ready to learn.
To bring out the absolute best in every child, we provide a vibrant enabling environment where our indoor and outdoor learning spaces are equally valued. Our continuous provision is carefully designed to spark independence, curiosity, and sustained engagement, offering countless rich opportunities for children to play, experiment, and follow their own interests. This element of discovery is beautifully balanced with explicit instruction. We deliver a rigorous daily phonics and early reading programme through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, alongside a carefully sequenced mathematics curriculum using our Number Sense programme. Rather than isolating these skills, purposeful opportunities to read, write, and apply mathematical thinking are seamlessly woven back into children's play and learning environments, ensuring that taught knowledge is practised in meaningful, real-world contexts.
What truly makes the Southville Early Years experience special is our bespoke, locally anchored curriculum, which is deeply rooted in our community, the changing seasons, and the children's own interests. Whether our children are exploring the local environment through visits to North Street, Dame Emily Park, or Windmill Hill City Farm, or immersing themselves in imaginative themes such as the Julia Donaldson-inspired The Deep, Dark Wood, learning is purposeful, memorable, and full of joy.
We believe that observing children in the Early Years should be purposeful and meaningful, allowing practitioners to spend their time interacting, playing, and learning alongside children rather than "testing" them. For this reason, we use the Opal (Observation of Play and Learning) assessment framework to celebrate each child's developmental journey over time. Through meaningful spotlights on your child's curiosity, creativity, resilience, communication, and emotional development—and in close partnership with you—we build a rich picture of each child's progress.
